Every srping we like to check a variety of manufacturer’s products looking for deals on the new year’s models. We just visited a couple of our favorite online stores (GoodBetterBestAudio.com and SoundsGreat.net) and found quite a few, but then glancing at Image Dynamics we found…nothing! No deals…in fact no product at all. After thirty minutes of searching the net plus a few phone calls, the best we can tell, Image Dynamics has backed out on almost all of their online authorized retailers. This is a bad move, in our opinion. Image was a company turned to by some fans of high-power, high-SPL setups. We aren’t sure what it means, but we don’t think it’s good. The short story is that we’re not going to keep scrounging around to find out who’s left selling their products. We’re turning our attention back to other brands.
So what else is out there? It ultimately depends on what you’re trying to accomplish, but the answer in a word is — plenty. In our opinion, Image Dynamics had some decent stuff in the past, but they were hardly the biggest name in subwoofers or other car stereo components to begin with — and they have always been on the pricey end. Tried-and-true companies like CDT Audio, Kicker and Rockford-Fosgate, along with some others we’ll get around to reviewing shortly, are all over the net in 2008, and all have rock-solid woofer and car speaker offerings. Look for more here soon on specific components in these various manufacturer’s 2008 lines.
Whether you’re a fan of amplified woofers or not, they can be a good choice for someone who just wants to kick their stock or aftermarket sound system up a notch by adding bass, without the hassle of dealing with separate component installation. But for really top-quality components – not to mention a classy-looking installation — you’ve got to go the separate component subwoofer, enclosure, amplifier route, right?
Well…not if top car audio manufacturer’s are willing to do most of the work for you! And that’s exactly what MTX offers with their ThunderForm enclosures. You get a great-looking, loaded enclosure – choose from single or dual 10” or 12”, quality, MTX woofers. An unquestionably cool and stylish look, with a wide range of available choices to match to the interior and color of your vehicle. You can get the amplified package, which is the best if you don’t want to deal with any extra installation and wiring, or with woofers only, if you want to use your own amp. Best of all, available discount pricing can bring the whole, high-class package within reach of most audiophile’s budgets. They’re a great option, worth your consideration, if you’re currently shopping around to add bass to your ride.
Maybe you’ve just bought a new car, with a pretty impressive-sounding stock car stereo system. Many auto manufacturers these days are including excellent quality speakers, head units and amps as either standard equipment, or upgrades. Or, maybe you’ve just sprung for a speaker upgrade, aftermarket radio, new amplifier, or some combination of the above. Either way, things are sounding pretty good!
So what’s the big deal with subwoofers? Will adding a subwoofer (or two) really make that big a difference in your car audio system? What will it take, and what will it cost??
To answer the first question in a word, “Yes!” It’s not all about volume either. It’s about sound quality. A properly fitted and installed subwoofer will always make a noticeable difference in the quality of your car sound system. Guaranteed. A good sound system will sound better; an already-great-sounding system will sound…well…phenomenal. Wow. If you haven’t ever experienced it, we can’t even give you enough words to describe it. You love great sound? You’ll love this. Trust us on that one.
For you less trusting types, we can tell you a bit about why.
Most obvious, perhaps, is that subwoofers are larger speakers, specifically designed just to reproduce low bass notes. Smaller full-range or midrange car speakers, no matter how good, cannot produce low frequency tones with the same efficiency and depth as a dedicated subwoofer. And if you pull those low frequencies away from your full-range speakers, they’ll do an even better job of producing the rest of the dynamic range. Properly installed, the result will be richer, truer sound with a depth and realism you didn’t even realize you were missing before.
